An art form that is enjoyable at all levels of professionalism and one which takes up a lot of my time, from researching to creating and enjoying.
One of concepts I regularly employ is local contrast enhancements, an effect that can add contrast between objects on a large scale and sharpness on a small scale.
Another concept is contrast, some of the techniques I use to obtain clarity: high dynamic range imaging, dodging, burning, as well as various blending modes and masking.
These take my pictures from the literal interpretation to a more surreal description of reality.
My interest in photography started at college but it was a laborious learning experience due to the chemical process.

I feel this comes from my background in traditional hand drawn art, spending 40 plus hours on a drawing, to do the same for a photograph is justifiable.
My workflow consists of multiple layers, a non-destructive method that allows for experimentation throughout the process. Methods include: blending modes, unsharp masks, colour filters, image as mask, high pass filter, noise reduction, and many more as and when needed. Source files are usually RAW and HDR. When using HDR, I output multiple images, from straight exposure conversions to local adaptation methods, then use them to refine the final image. This could be thought of as manual HDR, but I still require Photoshop to combine my bracketed exposures.
